Rydal Water

CC220       RYDAL WATER   cc220

The people of the Lake District are deservedly proud  of the poet Wordsworth and none more so than the inhabitants of the village of Grasmere where he lived and wrote some of his most beautiful poetry. This walk takes in the two lakes of Grasmere and Rydal Water and is justly regarded as one which offers the most  breath-taking scenery.

Parking is at the car-park on the road into Grasmere from the A591.

 1. From the car park turn right into the village. At St.Oswald's Church (where Wordsworth is buried) turn left into Langdale Rd. This will take you past another car park and on to the lakeside path. After about one mile you cross a ladder stile after which you turn right and proceed over one more stile for about half a mile.

2. As you approach a bridge bear right uphill on a narrow but clear path. Continue alongside a stone wall, ignore the ladder stile on the left, and later a gate, keeping with the track signposted  to Rydal for about half a mile. At the point where the main path climbs, away from the lake, you fork left down to a kissing gate and then through some trees.
3.  Go over a footbridge and turn right on to the road for approx 50 yards. Turn left up the road, passing St. Mary's church towards Rydal Mount. Wordsworth was a church warden of St. Mary's. Nearby you will see the field which has been named "Dora's Field". Dora was Wordsworth's daughter. Rydal Mount was Wordsworth’s second home until he died  in 1850.

4. After leaving Rydal Mount's garden turn left along the path and continue, through the gates for approximately one mile to join a lane. Carry on straight ahead ignoring a track which joins from the left. Dove Cottage  is clearly marked and is the house the poet lived in for the first ten years composing the most memorable of his poems. Cross the road just after Dove Cottage and carry on ahead to the car-park.
