CC 210   FERNS

fernsThe village of Dent can be reached by taking the B road from Sedbergh a distance of approximately 4 miles. Although a good two-lane highway, it is not given a number, either in the OS map of the area or the relevant road maps.

Park in the large car park in the middle of Dent.

1 Leave the car park and cross the road to walk up Dragon Croft. Pass the village green on the left and continue along the lane between two rows of pretty cottages, past Flintergill House on the right, to the last of the houses. At this point the tarmac lane becomes much narrower and then quickly becomes a rough, stony track - all the while gradually climbing.

Follow this track uphill for approximately 1 miles, going through a couple of gates en route.

2 Beside the gate at the tracks end there is a bench. A short pause here will give - weather permitting - magnificent views of the Howgills off to the left and, to the right, a beautiful birds eye-view down Dentdale to the great bulk of Whernside.

3 Go through the gate and turn right onto a wide, walled track, clearly signposted Keldishaw. Follow this track to the road - 1 mile and turn right. After approximately 1 mile look for a signpost to Dent/Gawthrop on the right.  At the signpost turn right through the gate onto a clear farm track. The track takes you to the right of the barn and then follows the wall on your left until you come to a gate.

4 After the gate turn sharp left over the bridge. Follow the path to a white farm-house. Go through the gate into the farm-yard keeping to the left of the buildings. The path then turns right passing the back of the farmhouse. It's all clearly signed. Go over a wooden stile and bear right down the field towards the beck. Cross the flat, stone bridge , turning left up through the woods. Go over the stile into a field. From the stile you can see a barn in the next field.

5 Aim for the left end of that barn. As you get nearer you will go through a little gate-stile in the wall to your left and then go over the ladder stile in the wall on the right. Bear left, down the field to the opposite wall where there is a stile near some hawthorn trees. After crossing it follow the fence to the left, around the bottom of the field to a gate. Pass through the gate and another gate just a short distance away.

6 Take the next gate on the right and then drop down the field towards the farm buildings where you will see a further gate at the right hand end of the farm buildings. Bear left out of the gate through the farmyard. You will pass a short terrace of cottages on the right. The path to Dent is clearly signed to the left, down onto the road. However, if you carry on straight through the rest of the buildings you will find that the field path is also clearly signed, through the gate.

7 Bear right across the field to a little plank bridge with a gate at the end. Cross this field up and right to the opposite wall to a stile. Keeping the wall on your left follow it to a metal 'kissing gate' onto the road. Turn left to take the road back to the car park.
